Kane Creek is a nice area for outdoorsy activities. There is hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and OHV trails. On this day we were doing a bit of hiking off the beaten path. We didn’t get very far though before running into this beaver pond which we couldn’t easily pass. We hung out for a minute to see if Whiskey would swim, but he didn’t so we didn’t linger.

Whiskey was too afraid to get in the water, but he really wanted the stick. He kept dancing back and forth on the bank and barking in frustration at the stick.

I wasn’t comfortable hiking in the area for fear of running into a beaver trap. Earlier this year a young woman’s dog was killed in an illegal beaver trap while hiking in the area. I had forgotten about the incident until I saw signs of beaver. You have to be some kind of idiot to trap in such heavily trafficked areas like this. As I understand it, it isn’t illegal to trap in the area, but in this case, the trap wasn’t registered so it was illegal. In any case, it is extremely irresponsible to trap in this general area. It’s bad enough that a dog was killed but what if a child had stepped in that trap.

Beaver tree felled in three different directions.
